I have always struggled to feel right wearing "pretty" clothes. It may very well be my inner child rebelling against all the cutie-pie party dresses my mother used to dress me in.
These days I find happiness in pulling on something simple, with clean lines and subtle colour (or lack thereof).

The one thing from my childhood I havent been able to let go of - ankle socks.
I think they are an lovely improvement to classic (which to me, sometimes means too safe slash boring) pumps.
